E3 2010 Preview: Shooters

fpnews E3 Starts today, I found a nice post over at Kotaku's site, Shooters dominate the modern video game landscape, as evidenced by the sheer number of them being shown off at this year's E3. Here are console and PC shooters we think are going to be the biggest ones on show.

They may be fresh in our minds, they may have been first unveiled at last year's show, it doesn't matter, if they're going to make an E3 appearance - hopefully in playable form - then we'll go take a look at them. This includes some of the biggest games of the year, like Halo: Reach and Black Ops, and some of the biggest games of next year, like Gears of War 3 and Portal 2.

Without further ado, then, here are the shooters that we expect to be making the most noise comes June 15 at the Los Angeles Convention Centre..

Gamers Can control dreams ?

fpnews Playing video games before bedtime may give people an unusual level of awareness and control in their dreams, LiveScience has learned.

That ability to shape the alternate reality of dream worlds might not match mind-bending Hollywood films such as "The Matrix," but it could provide an edge when fighting nightmares or even mental trauma.

Dreams and video games both represent alternate realities, according to Jayne Gackenbach, a psychologist at Grant MacEwan University in Canada. But she pointed out that dreams arise biologically from the human mind, while video games are technologically driven by computers and gaming consoles.

"If you're spending hours a day in a virtual reality, if nothing else it's practice," said Jayne Gackenbach, a psychologist at Grant MacEwan University in Canada. "Gamers are used to controlling their game environments, so that can translate into dreams."

Ubisoft's controversial 'always on' PC DRM hacked

fpnews Ubisoft's always-on digital rights management solution, dubbed the "Online Services Network," has apparently been circumvented by hackers. News of its arrival on peer-to-peer file-sharing networks began circulating in places like social-news site Reddit Wednesday morning.

New Game mode for Battlefield Heroes

EA DICE released a new game mode for the cartoon shooter Battlefield-Heroes. The game mode is available on a new map, and the new map is a night map, so the Heroes players will get the chance to play in dark surroundings.

EA About the new game mode:

"In this fast paced game mode you and your allies must capture and hold the rocket and keep it from enemy hands. Jump in with gusto or rocket fuel and make sure your enemies do not get the upper hand and claim the rocket for themselves."

Is this the end for Infinity Ward?

Earlier today in an article from kotaku, a source close to Infinty Ward revealed something that most of the COD community probably already knew. The atmosphere in the studio is quite bad duo the recent dropouts. The previous Infinity Ward chiefs Jason West and Vince Zampella has moved forward and created Respawn Entertainment, and a lot of the other key members from the team that created the popular Call of duty: Modern Warfare 2 has now left the studio as well.

Are Consoles the end for pc gaming ?

fpnews Over the past decade some of the most exciting developments in processors have come not from the CPU makers but the graphics guys. Graphics hardware has evolved significantly from the original dream of implementing OpenGL in hardware to the multicore parallel processing chips that drive today's offerings.

The big question that hangs over the industry is whether gamers actually need the kind of performance delivered by the latest hardware such as NVIDIA's long awaited Fermi GPU.

Despite constant delays, the Fermi architecture, also know by the GF100 moniker, is getting closer to release. With current estimates putting it around April 12^th, this is a generational shift in NVIDIA's hardware design. At the moment a huge number of details are still up in the air, such as card speeds and the number of processing cores that will ship. This hasn't stopped the hype machine as excitement builds over NVIDIA's offering in the DirectX 11 space.

Developers Discuss Future of PC Gaming at PAX

It was a dark, albeit not that stormy, night as the "Future of PC Gaming (Yes, there is one!)" panel kicked off at PAX East around 10PM EST. Considering what the panelists had to say, the setting was oddly appropriate.

Across the hour-long discussion, two things were abundantly clear. First, things need to change, and they're not going to do so overnight. Second, "Honestly, I think PC gaming isn't where it was ten years ago and it's never going to be there again."

Need for Speed MMO hits beta

After 14 installments over the last 15 years, the most ambitious and innovativeversion of Need for Speed is on the horizon. EA is working on a free-to-play massively multiplayer online racer, exclusive to the PC. Joystiq notes that an MMO version of the game could be the last Need for Speed title EA will have to make, offering a potential platform for "limitless updates."

Called Need for Speed World, the title has only just reached beta but already boasts over 150 miles of open road. Joystiq says the game follows the arcade-inspired mechanics of previous NFS entries, and should be widely accessible with hardware requirements including a 2.0GHz processor, 2GB of RAM, and a 512MB graphics card.
